Looking ahead, Alug anticipates that religious tourism will not only generate temporary employment but also offer long-term career prospects. He suggests that by 2028, it could amass revenue of $60 billion, indicating a promising avenue for job seekers. Post-Covid, there has been a noticeable surge in overnight pilgrimages, accompanied by a 14% increase in donations during 2021-2022.
The recent inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is expected to further catalyze this trend. Alug predicts that this event alone could create approximately 25,000 jobs across various sectors like hospitality, food services, and tourism management.
Beyond direct job creation, religious tourism is poised to stimulate entrepreneurship across various sectors including food services, consumer goods, and logistics. Alug forecasts a 6 to 8% uptick in new enterprises catering specifically to religious tourists nationwide.
Citing Ministry of Tourism data, Alug notes that in 2022, a staggering 1.439 million people participated in religious tourism, generating revenue of Rs 1.34 lakh crore. He observes a surge in tourist footfall in smaller towns and non-metro cities across states like Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, indicating a broader economic impact beyond major urban centers.
